Published 20 October 2026. On 2026/27 rates a one-person company drawing all its profit pays more tax than a sole trader at every level from £20k to £150k. Short answer: - On our 2026/27 sums, a one-person limited company that pays out all its profit costs more tax than being a sole trader at all six profit levels we tested, from £894 more at £20,000 profit to £6,931 more at £150,000. - The main reason is the dividend tax rise from 6 April 2026: the basic rate went from 8.75% to 10.75% and the higher rate from 33.75% to 35.75%. - Corporation tax is 19% on profits up to £50,000 and 25% above £250,000, with marginal relief in between; employer National Insurance is 15% on salary above £5,000. - The gap is smallest at around £60,000 of profit (about £20 on our figures), and a company can only pull ahead if you leave profit in it rather than drawing it all. - A company also adds fixed costs: £100 to incorporate online, £50 a year for the confirmation statement, payroll, statutory accounts and usually a bigger accountant's bill. ### Business bank account offers UK: live tracker checked against T&Cs https://tillradar.co.uk/business-bank-account-offers/ Hub. Published 20 October 2026. Every live UK business bank account offer we could confirm in the provider's terms: £200 cash bonuses, fee-free months and free software, valued in pounds. Short answer: - We track 28 live UK business bank account offers and 10 that ended in 2026, each read against the provider's own terms. - The largest cash offers pay £200: Lloyds (apply online by 30 November 2026), Revolut Business (by 31 December 2026) and Tide's TIS200, which needs £10,000 saved for 30 days. - Only Lloyds' own page lets you combine two offers: the £200 boost plus Xero's free months and £200 gift card. - The longest fee-free period is Metro Bank's 31 months, but only for a full switch completed in store. At £8 a month that is worth £248. - HMRC's manual treats a cashback received in the course of trading as a trading receipt. Assume a cash bonus adds to taxable profit and check with your accountant. ### Making Tax Digital for Income Tax: 2026–2028 thresholds, dates, steps https://tillradar.co.uk/making-tax-digital-income-tax/ Hub. Published 20 October 2026. MTD for Income Tax covers gross self-employment and property income over £50k from April 2026, £30k from 2027 and £20k from 2028. Dates, penalties, steps. Short answer: - Who is in: sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 (from 6 April 2026), over £30,000 (from 6 April 2027) and over £20,000 (from 6 April 2028). - Qualifying income means gross self-employment plus gross property income, before expenses. The 2025/26 return decides who joins in April 2027. - What you do: keep digital records, send 4 quarterly updates (due 7 August, 7 November, 7 February and 7 May) and submit your tax return from software by 31 January. - Penalties: no points for late quarterly updates in 2026/27. From 2027/28 each missed deadline earns a point, and 4 points cost £200. - Software: HMRC doesn't provide any. Some free business accounts include it, but not all of them can file the year-end return yet. ### Best business bank accounts UK 2026: yearly cost for 6 business types https://tillradar.co.uk/business-bank-accounts/ Hub. Published 20 October 2026. Live check of HMRC sign-in, VAT, Self Assessment, MTD and Companies House every 2 minutes, with HMRC's official notices and what to do before a deadline. Short answer: - Is HMRC down right now? The live check below runs every 2 minutes and shows each service separately. - We check HMRC sign-in, the business and personal tax accounts, VAT online, the MTD for Income Tax account, the MTD API gateway, GOV.UK One Login, Companies House WebFiling, the register search and the Companies House API. The HMRC app cannot be checked from outside. - Only HMRC's and Companies House's own notices count if you later appeal a penalty. We read them every 30 minutes and show them under the live result. - If HMRC is down before the 31 January Self Assessment deadline, keep the error message and the time, and file as soon as it works again. HMRC's guidance lists "issues with HMRC online services" as a reasonable excuse. Its internal manual gives roughly 14 days after the problem ends as the limit for "without unreasonable delay". - A Self Assessment return that is one day late costs £100. Paying the tax a few days late adds interest only: the first 5% late payment penalty comes at 30 days. For VAT, the first late payment penalty comes at 16 days. - Companies House has no automatic relief for outages. Accounts filed 1 day late cost a private company £150. If you can see trouble coming, apply for more time before the deadline. - HMRC plans its downtime ahead. From January to October 2026 it announced 8 windows (520 hours) for MTD for Income Tax, almost all starting on a Friday or Saturday evening. ### Companies House ID verification deadline: check yours (2026) https://tillradar.co.uk/companies-house-identity-verification/ Guide. Published 20 October 2026. Existing directors verify with the next confirmation statement (statement date + 14 days); PSCs have a fixed 14-day window. Check your date here. Short answer: - There is no single national deadline. An existing director must give their Companies House personal code in the company's next confirmation statement, which is due 14 days after the statement date. A director who is also a PSC gives the code a second time, as a PSC, in the 14 days starting the day after that date. - A PSC who is not a director had to give their code in the first 14 days of their birth month. The windows ran from 1–14 December 2025 to 1–14 November 2026. - The transition period is the 12 months beginning on 18 November 2025, so its last day is 17 November 2026, 28 days after this check. Deadlines linked to statement dates of 4–17 November 2026 still run to 1 December 2026. - Since 18 November 2025, a new director must be verified before acting, and a new PSC has 14 days to give their code. - Verifying directly through GOV.UK One Login is free, by app, online or at a Post Office. An Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP) can verify you instead and may charge for it. - Missing your date is a criminal offence. The first convictions came on 16 September 2026: three directors were fined £80 to £307, plus £85 costs each. Companies House can also issue penalties of up to £10,000. - People who file at Companies House on a company's behalf will have to verify from November 2027 at the earliest, with at least six months' notice. ### E-invoicing UK 2029: deadline, Peppol and what small firms must do https://tillradar.co.uk/e-invoicing-uk/ Guide. Published 20 October 2026. E-invoicing is mandatory in the UK from April 2029 for VAT invoices to businesses and public bodies, sent over Peppol. Who is in scope and what to do now. Short answer: - When: e-invoicing becomes mandatory in the UK from April 2029 for VAT invoices on business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-government (B2G) sales. HMRC has confirmed the month, not the day. - Who: VAT-registered businesses. Sales to consumers are out of scope, and businesses that are not VAT-registered (turnover under the £90,000 threshold, unless registered voluntarily) are not obliged. - How: invoices will travel between businesses' own software over Peppol, a network of certified providers. There is no central HMRC platform and no real-time reporting to HMRC in 2029. - What a PDF is: not an e-invoice. The government's definition excludes PDF and Word invoices, images and invoices in the body of an email. - Not yet confirmed: phasing by business size, penalties, software accreditation and any free government tool. The roadmap and standards are due at Budget 2026 on 28 October 2026. - Already needed: NHS Supply Chain requires its suppliers to send e-invoices over Peppol today. - Software: of the five big names, only Xero says on its UK pages that you can send and receive Peppol e-invoices now. Two cheaper invoicing tools also send them. ### Budget 2026 for small business: what changes for sole traders and Ltds https://tillradar.co.uk/budget-small-business/ Guide. Published 20 October 2026. Budget 2026 is on 28 October. What is already fixed for sole traders and Ltds, what the government says is coming, and what we will check on the day. Short answer: - Budget 2026 is on Wednesday 28 October 2026. The Chancellor, John Healey, confirmed the date in a letter to the Treasury Select Committee published by HM Treasury on 31 July 2026. - Several small-business changes are already fixed in law or announced, whatever the Budget says: dividend tax of 10.75% / 35.75% / 39.35% since 6 April 2026, and Making Tax Digital for Income Tax for gross income over £30,000 from 6 April 2027 and over £20,000 from 6 April 2028. - Income tax and self-employed National Insurance thresholds are frozen at £12,570 and £50,270 until April 2031, announced at Budget 2025. - Employers pay 15% National Insurance above £5,000 a year per employee, with an Employment Allowance of up to £10,500 (2026/27 rates). - The VAT registration threshold is £90,000, unchanged since 1 April 2024. We found no official announcement of a change or of a fixed freeze period. - The government has said two things will come at this Budget: the e-invoicing roadmap for mandatory VAT e-invoicing from April 2029, and the final fuel duty rates from 1 January 2027. ## About TillRadar - [About TillRadar](https://tillradar.co.uk/about/): Who runs TillRadar, how it is funded and which companies I am involved in. - [How we make money](https://tillradar.co.uk/how-we-make-money/): Where TillRadar's income comes from and what payment can never buy. - [Editorial policy](https://tillradar.co.uk/editorial-policy/): How offers are checked, dated, corrected and removed. - [Contact](https://tillradar.co.uk/contact/): How to reach TillRadar. - [Terms of use](https://tillradar.co.uk/terms/): The rules for using TillRadar. - [Privacy policy](https://tillradar.co.uk/privacy-policy/): What personal data TillRadar collects, why, and your rights under UK GDPR. ## For AI agents - [For AI agents](https://tillradar.co.uk/for-agents/): public read-only REST API, MCP server and Markdown pages; no registration - [MCP server](https://tillradar.co.uk/mcp): Streamable HTTP; tools list_offers, get_offer, account_fees, cost_ranking, search_guides, site_status, list_my_reminders, add_reminder, remove_reminder - [OpenAPI 3.1](https://tillradar.co.uk/openapi.json): REST API at https://tillradar.co.uk/wp-json/tr/v1 - [Agent skill](https://tillradar.co.uk/.well-known/agent-skills/tillradar-uk-business-banking/SKILL.md): how to use and cite the data ## Citing Each API and MCP result has a `url` on tillradar.co.uk and a `cite` line.
